POLITICAL CONFLICT

Whilst political conflict is not a direct threat to rhinos, it facilitates other threats, such as poaching. In areas with political conflict, such as war zones or where there is political instability and law and order may have broken down, it becomes easier for criminals to poach rhinos and other endangered species, as there is often less protection on the ground by rangers and authorities.

Currently, poaching is the main threat to rhinos’ survival. Work to reduce this threat takes place through anti-poaching patrols, effective fencing of reserves and sanctuaries, and continued, long-term engagement with local communities.
